Kids Club/Teens in Action Success Story

October — December,
2002

Fallon
is an outspoken 16-year-old at Pinkston
High School and a member of Camp Fire USA Lone Star Councils
Teens in Action program.

An extremely motivated girl, Fallon is focused on graduating
from high school and then pursing a career in the medical
field as a physical therapist or a registered nurse.

Before she joined Camp Fire USA, however, Fallon was hardly focused on her future. At this time last year, in fact, she had totally lost interest in school and had stopped attending classes. Luckily, she was recruited into Camp Fire USA’s Teens in Action program.

Camp Fire is the most beneficial program that I have ever been in,” said Fallon. After only a short time in the program, Fallon decided to go back to school full-time. With a newfound enthusiasm for learning, she credits Camp Fire USA for teaching her the value of working hard and setting goals.

“They helped me find a job and to be a part of a lot of different activities and outings, said Jefferson. Camp Fire USA has opened up many opportunities to me.”

Through the Teens in Action program, Fallon was able to attend the national Teen Congress with other youth from across the nation. This experience greatly affected her, and she came back to the program as a much more active leader. In fact, her peers elected her to serve as a youth representative on Camp Fire USA Lone Star Council’s Board of Directors!

“I was very excited to attend my first board meeting,” Fallon said. When asked if she was nervous to be in front of so many adults, Fallon just smiled and shook her head.

Fallon has also taken Camp Fire USA’s “A Gift of Giving” program to heart. During the week, she volunteers as a leader at Camp Fire USAs after-school Kids Club program. The group meets at the apartment complex where Fallon lives, and she really enjoys working with the kids in her community. Fallon’s favorite activities in the program are helping kids with their homework and reading to them.

As a sign of her outspoken leadership, Jefferson is very vocal about her beliefs in her group. Unlike many girls her age, she has very firm opinions on teen pregnancy. She often talks to her friends about abstinence and about ways to avoid teen pregnancy and STDs.

I like to say, ‘Make a life for yourself before you make another life.’ said Fallon. As everyone that meets her knows,
Fallon is making a wonderful life and an extremely bright future for herself.
