Kids
Club / Teens
in Action Success Story

April

June, 2002

TaNorris is not your average 14 year old. Like many other members of Camp Fire USA’s
Kids
Club
, he does his homework, learns computer skills, does outdoor activities, learns about self-esteem, leadership, and community service, and goes on all field trips. However, TaNorris has an asthma condition which was brought upon by a lung disease at the age of 3. As a result, he has to
carry an oxygen tank with him everywhere that goes. He also has a hearing

disability that requires him to wear a hearing aid in both ears. However, being in Camp Fire USA has taught TaNorris not to let these disabilities stop him from participating in
activities; rather, he has learned to overcome all obstacles that are put in front of him.

This summer, TaNorris is participating in Camp Fire USA’s Teens in Action program. This program hires teenagers ages 14 and 15 to do various jobs through Camp Fire USA (everything from working with other kids to helping out in the main office). In his job, TaNorris works with the
KIDTALK Phone Line.

This program allows children that are left home alone to call TaNorris and other workers during the day and to talk about anything that they want — problems that they are having at home, worries that they have about growing up or just sharing jokes. All of the phone responders are connected to a computer so they can access information quickly. TaNorris has not once used his condition as an excuse to not perform any duties; in fact, he has worked even harder harder than many of his peers in an effort to help others.
He truly is a caring, confident youth and future leader.

TaNorris wanted to write down a few words about his experience with Camp Fire USA:

My name is TaNorris. I have been in Kids Club at Kingsbridge Crossing. As a member, I have learned how to operate a computer and gone on field trips.
WIA helped me to get a summer job at the Camp Fire office. In my position, I work in the Kid Talk Department. I talk on the telephone with kids. I do office work, make posters, and I help design flyers for the Kid Talk program. I hope other young people will take advantage of this opportunity with the Camp Fire WIA program.

Thank you,
TaNorris”
