Success Stories:

Camp Fire USA
Lone Star Council is fortunate to have been designated a partner in the 21st
Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) program. Created by President
George W. Bushs No Child Left Behind Act, the program creates a learning
environment beyond the classroom by providing a chance for students and families
to learn new skills after the school day.

To support this initiative, Congress
has appropriated $1 billion for after school programs in 2002. Camp Fire USA
participates in this program through the Dallas Independent School District (DISD);
specifically, the Lone Star Council has set up after-school youth development
programs in ten schools through the DISD.

This program
aims to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children
attending low performing schools. Activities such as supplemental tutoring and
academic enrichment are aimed at helping students meet required academic
standards. Whats more, 21st CCLC programs provide other youth development and
enrichment activities, drug and violence prevention programs, technology
education programs, art, music and recreation programs and counseling.

Set up in ten
area schools, this project provides a safe, drug-free environment for students,
parents and community members beyond the regular academic day. The following
four grants are part of Camp Fire USAs 21st CCLC program:

 Las Luces
en la Noche (The Lights at Night)

Communities of Light

 Beacons in
the Community

 The New
Neighborhood.

The primary goal
of these grants is to help recipients provide a safe place for students of
working parents during non-school hours. Camp Fire USA uses these sites not only
for after school youth development, but for community enrichment classes for
families and adults:

 tax
preparation classes

 aerobics
classes

 ESL
(English as Second Language) Classes

 and much more!

The
21st CCLC has also played an important role in the development of Camp Fire
USA’s Community Family Club (CFC) program. As a a matter of fact, the program at
Kahn Elementary has quickly become the largest CFC in the Lone Star Council. To
