A former program
coordinator in the Kids Club program, Pete Chavez was
promoted to the position of director of the Teens in Action Program
in the summer of 2001. This program was initially funded by a grant from Work
Source for Dallas County (with funds from the Workforce Investment Act, or WIA),
but has since acquired additional support from the Criminal Justice Division (CJD),
Dallas County Juvenile Department (which supports the Alternative Education
program) and the DISD (with funds through the 21st Century Community Learning
Center program, or 21st CCLC).

Pete’s program helps
teens, 10-21 (both in-school and out-of-school youth), make good decisions and develop positive peer relationships by
involving them in high-adventure group activities. The program also concentrates
on providing low-income teens with job skills, career development and employment
opportunities. In the summer, the WIA funds provide 14-15 year olds with jobs in
Camp Fire USA’s programs.

Thanks to Pete’s leadership, the
program has recently caught the attention of the Ben & Jerry’s organization. In
fact, Camp Fire USA Lone Star Council has recently been awarded the opportunity
to open up a
PartnerShop
because of our successful Teens in Action program!
