Camping Success Story

January
March, 2003

Jose is a second grader and a member of
Camp Fire USA Lone Star Councils 21st Century Community Learning
Center program. Previously to joining Camp Fire, he was very shy,
withdrawn and fearful. Now Jose is an active participate in Camp Fire
and has even developed a special interest in the camping program at
Camp
Ellowi
.

Joses parents are going through an ugly separation, says
Yolanda G. Santos, Director of the
21st CCLC program. The fighting
between his parents has created a lot of turmoil in his life and caused
him to become anxious of new people and situation. Fortunately, Joses Camp Fire leaders are determined to provide him with an
environment that creates a sense of belonging and stability.

Before joining Camp Fire, Jose tried to join other after-school
programs in the area; however, Joses dad had threatened to kidnap
him and no program wanted to take responsibility for protecting him from
his father. Camp Fire accepted Jose into its program without
reservation. Soon after joining, Jose went to Spring Break Camp at
Camp Ellowi with the 21st CCLC program.

I made so many friends at camp, says Jose. Playing games was
my favorite part.

After camp, Joses mother called to thank Camp Fire for including
her son in the program. She said that back at school, Joses
teachers have seen a remarkable change in his attitude and willingness
to participate in classroom activities. Joses mother wants him to
go to camp during the summer also, but does not have the money to send
him herself so the 21st CCLC program is paying for him to attend two
weeks of summer camp.

I cant wait to go back to camp this summer, says Jose. I
have so much fun with Camp Fire.

Camp Fire USA enjoys working with such a spirited and
exceptional youth as Jose.
