CCLC Success Story

January
March, 2003

Danielle Evans, a Camp
Fire USA Lone Star Council employee, is an exceptional leader and shows
great dedication to the youth she serves. For example, some of the
English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) students at Greiner Middle School
were having problems learning English, so Danielle took the initiative
to start a 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school program
that would allow them to further practice their English skills.

The students are very receptive to Danielle, says Yolanda G.
Santos, director of the 21st Century Community Learning Center program.
She is doing a wonderful job of teaching the students English, but
more importantly she is helping the parents get involved in the lives of
their children and in school activities.

Danielle meets at Greiner twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday
afternoons for Camp Fires ESL class. Currently, 19 students are
enrolled in the program.

I enjoy watching the kids faces light up when they understand what
I say in English and when they are able to answer my questions in
English, says Danielle. It is very important for them to master
their ESL classes, so they can advance in school and get a good
education.

Parental involvement is key in building caring, confident youth and
future leaders. In order to increase parental participation, Danielle
encouraged all 19 of her students to tell their parents about a PTA
meeting at Greiner on a Thursday evening. She also asked the students to
invite their parents to come to the PTA meeting to meet her and learn
what their children had been doing in the Camp Fire program.

Out of the 19 students enrolled in the Camp Fire program, 12 students
and their parents attended the meeting. For all 12 parents, it was their
first time at a PTA meeting.

Camp Fire USA is grateful to have a dedicated staff member like
Danielle.
