Since 1940, Dallas Metroplex children have been enjoying the
wonderful outdoors at Camp Fire USA Lone Star Council�s
Camp
Ellowi on 65-wooded acres in
Cedar Hill. Each summer Camp Fire USA holds weekly day camp
sessions for children ages six � 15 in order to teach youth
about nature and conservation, to respect others and to work
together to accomplish tasks set before them. Camp Fire
believes that the camping experience is a very important tool
in developing caring, confident youth and future leaders.
This
year�s summer day camp was an
experience
of a lifetime for many of
the campers during the 9th session of camp. During
the Friday of this session, over a dozen soldiers from the U.S.
Army 2nd Battalion, 381st Regiment came to
camp for �Army Day.� The purpose of Army Day was to teach the
youth about the military, to encourage them to stay in shape and
to inspire them to get an education.
Glenda Steward, mother of
a day camper and a Captain in the U.S. Army, organized this
event with Camp Fire USA. Thanks to Capt. Steward�s vision and
dedication to this event, over 50 campers were educated about
the military, fitness and education while participating in fun
and informative activities. For a special treat, all campers
were also given Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) to take home for
dinner.
�I
enjoyed volunteering at camp and sharing my skills and knowledge
with the kids,� Capt. Steward said. �It is important to give
back to the community in any way you can.�
Army
Day activities included:

An Opening
Ceremony with the raising of the flag,
o
Marching
exercises,
o
Physical training
exercises,
o
A tour of a High
Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV),
o
Protective mask
and chemical suit education,
o
Heat casualty
class,
o
Army radio
demonstration,
o
Drown proofing �
demonstration of how to create a floatation devise out of an
Army uniform,
o
Viewing an Army
tent and sleeping bag and learning how to use an entrenching
tool around a tent and
o
Camouflaging face
painting.
�Camp
Fire USA believes it is important to educate children about what
they see everyday on the news � the military,� said Tim James, executive director of the
Lone Star Council. �We believe that the more children know about
a situation, the less scared they will be by it.�
Camp
Fire USA thanks Capt. Steward and the other Army members for
giving back to the community by volunteering their time at Camp
Ellowi and educating and inspiring Camp Fire youth!
