Alternative
Education
Learn About…
Since
July
1991, the Alternative Education
Program has served local youth, ages 10-17, who are on probation for juvenile
offenses and who may be experiencing multiple problems at home and at school.
The program contracts with the Dallas County Juvenile Department to provide
supervision, counseling, GED assistance, career exploration, remedial tutoring
and other services to court-referred youth. Designed as a positive alternative
for youth on probation, Camp Fire USAs Alternative Education Program keeps
its participants enrolled in school, safe at home and — most importantly — off
of the streets.
Through group projects, the youth have positive experiences
with adults, develop leadership traits and self-esteem and learn to cope with
negative peer pressure, avoid dangerous situations and make positive decisions.
The program is currently offered at Camp Fire USA’s Camp
Ellowi in Cedar Hill. A family-style meal is served each
evening and youth are transported home after each meeting. Monthly family
nights and recognition ceremonies celebrate both the family and the youths
accomplishments.
