Needed For
National Youth
Forum
We are looking for volunteers to help with the National Youth
Leadership Forum at the TCU campus in Fort Worth. From July 29 � August
1, 400 Camp Fire youth and adults from across the U.S. will meet to
discuss violence in America. The Booster Club is sponsoring a youth to
this forum.

opportunities available through the Dallas Youth collaborative program at
Stevens Park Elementary School. We will need volunteers to supervise
during these field trips:

Years of Service
The
year was 1910. Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick and his wife, Charlotte Vetter
Gulick, founded the first national, nonsectarian, interracial organization
for girls in the United States. Today, in the year 2000, Camp Fire Boys
and Girls celebrates 90 years of service.
In recognition of the 90-year anniversary, the Lone Star Council of
Camp Fire sent the following press release hoping to recruit members for
the Alumni Booster Club:

Fire Boys and Girls Celebrates 90th Anniversary with an
Alumni Search
Imagine – 90 years ago a group of girls in
Vermont met for an adventuresome camp out. They sang songs,
slept under the stars and cooked over an open fire. Now imagine
that small group developing into a nationwide program that today
serves over 630,000 boys and girls nationwide.
That�s Camp Fire Boys and Girls.
In recognition of Camp Fire Boys and Girls 90th
anniversary, the Lone Star Council of Camp Fire is establishing
the Alumni Booster Club. Former Camp Fire youth members, leaders,
volunteers and board members are encouraged to join the Booster
Club and share their Camp Fire spirit regardless of where they
were involved as a Camp Fire member.
�Our alumni represent an untapped resource that can help
us reach out to more youth, either through their direct volunteer
involvement or through their enthusiastic encouragement,� says
Tim James, the executive director of Lone Star Council of Camp
Fire.
Give yourself a pat on the back for helping our youth become
caring, confident youth who will be our future leaders. We do appreciate
your efforts!

What�s
in a Name?
Choosing a name for the new organization in 1910 was a
responsibility the Gulicks took very seriously. Luther Gulick suggested
that the organization take fire as its symbol. Fire symbolizes the center
of community and home, where friends and family gather.
And because the organization would always have a strong
environmental consciousness with camping as one of its many emphases, the
name, �Camp Fire Girls,� was adopted.
The red, white and blue colors of the logo represent citizenship.
The flame of the logo is surrounded by the WoHeLo triangle, that stands
for �work,� �health� and �love.�
In 1910, the first fire was lit for an important movement for
girls. It would soon ignite into an important movement for youth
everywhere.
