Teens in Action Success Story

January – March, 2003

Elvin is an eighth grader at Gaston Middle School and a member of Camp Fire USA Lone Star Council’s Teens in Action program. He is on his school’s football team and has a tremendous love of sports, even though he doesn’t start for his team or even get to play very often.

Through Camp Fire, Elvin has learned the joy of participating in sports and the importance of teamwork.

In April, the Teens in Action program organized a weeklong softball tournament between 10 of its program sites. During the tournament, Elvin took on the leadership role for his team as he helped place his teammates in the right positions and lead cheers.

“The goal was not to have a softball clinic or find an all-star player, but to give everyone the opportunity to feel like an all-star,” says Amy Evans, Group Leader for the Teens in Action program. “Elvin proved that it is a person’s attitude that makes all the difference. He has a real talent for inspiring and leading his peers.”

Elvin’s team ended up winning the softball tournament, but even the teams who didn’t win walked away feeling like they belonged to something special . . . and they did – Camp Fire USA. The tournament was very important because both boys and girls were treated as equals and everyone got the opportunity to bat and be out in the field.

“I never played softball before joining Camp Fire,” says Elvin. “We had so much fun. I can’t wait until the next time we get to play.”

The Teens in Action program has enabled Elvin to make many new friends and develop into a true leader.

“Without Camp Fire, I would never have had the opportunity to learn a new sport or make so many great friends,” says Elvin.

Camp Fire USA is proud to recognize tremendous leaders like Elvin.
