21st CCLC Success Story

April – June, 2003

Bernice is 15 years old and is involved in Camp Fire USA’s 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) after-school program at Sunset High School. A very energetic young lady, Bernice is involved in many different activities.

“Some children might be overwhelmed with this many activities during the school year, but not Bernice. She embraced every opportunity that was put in front of her and still wanted to do more,” said Armando Aquinaga, Program Coordinator in the 21st CCLC Program.

In addition to participating in the regular Camp Fire USA programs, Bernice has played music on the Academia de Musica and has learned to skateboard in the Skateboarding Club offered through the 21st CCLC program. Since she was such an active participant and such a wonderful role model for the younger members, she was also recruited to work for Camp Fire USA as a group leader at the Chill Out Day Camp at Greiner Middle School.

“It was a great experience,” says Bernice. Her supervisors agreed, and said that Bernice was one of the best group leaders at the camp.

Through the 21st CCLC Program, Bernice was able to go on her first overnight camp out at Camp Fire’s Camp Ellowi in Cedar Hill. Through Camp Fire USA, she has also represented her group in San Antonio at the national Youth Summit, has visited Houston’s NASA Space Center and has traveled to Galveston beach where she saw the Ocean for the first time in her life.

“Camp Fire has given me so many unforgettable experiences,” Bernice said. “Seeing the Ocean was a dream come true.”

An exceptional young lady, Bernice is already making plans to attend college at either UTA or SMU. Her career goal is to become a Pediatrician, but she would also like to study Psychology and Astronomy in school. Currently she is an A&B honor roll student.

Camp Fire is very proud of Bernice and knows that, with her great attitude and positive personality, she will accomplish all of her goals and will shine like a star!
