GRANT CREATES MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

Camp Fire USA receives $12,000 grant from New York Life Foundation

GRANTOR:

New York Life Foundation

GRANTEE:

Camp Fire USA Lone Star Council, www.campfireusadallas.org.

WHAT:

On July 1, 2004, the Lone Star Council was one of three Camp Fire USA councils throughout the

country to receive a planning grant of $12,000 to develop a “best practices” manual for reaching

middle school audiences with the Camp Fire USA curriculum. The grant will also assist with

the development and testing of key marketing plans and school outreach strategies for the

Greater Dallas community.

The grant, which is administered by Camp Fire USA’s National Headquarters, is renewable for three

more years beginning January 2005. If renewed, the Lone Star Council will start at least five new

programs in middle school sites throughout Dallas next year. Renewal is based on the council’s

ability to develop a sound plan for implementing the curriculum in Dallas.

“We are very excited about this opportunity to work with the New York Life Foundation,” said Tim

James, Executive Director of the Lone Star Council. “Our plan will enable middle school youth to

explore who they are and to develop plans to become the people they want to be. The program will

teach them about how communities work and about their important role in effecting change in their

communities.”

According to Stewart Smith, National Chief Executive Officer of Camp Fire USA, “the far-reaching

goal for the program is the creation of 30 exemplary sites. An additional goal is the compilation and

publication of a best practices manual that will disseminate knowledge and replicable best practices

throughout our country.”

HISTORY:

Serving Dallas since 1913, the Lone Star Council served over 7,000 youth and their families last

year. Nearly all of these programs are offered at no cost to youth from low-income families.
