  1. A community -- usually an apartment, but also some schools, churches or rec. centers  -- sets aside a meeting place for the Kids Club.

  2. The community pays for a portion of the costs of the club.

  3. Camp Fire USA Lone Star Council hires a part-time Program Specialist to work at the Kids Club site every weekday from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

  4. Youth, ages 5 - 18, can drop in to the program any time during program hours. Typical program size is 15 - 20 children a day.

  5. Youth members participate in arts 'n crafts activities, educational programs and other projects that are part of Camp Fire USA national curriculum that involves the Five Trails and the Eight Healthy Lifestyles.

  6. Youth members also receive a snack and some assistance with their homework each day.

  7. Youth occasionally participate in weekend camping trips, group field trips and youth fund-raisers.

  8. All youth can earn prizes, emblems, and awards of recognition for their achievements.

  9. Includes the Academic Enrichment Program

  10. Community-wide events help create a strong network of support between families. In many Kids Club communities, there is also a Community Family Club.

Every year, Camp Fire USA conducts client surveys, parent surveys, and interviews to determine the effectiveness of the Kids Club program at meeting Camp Fire USA's three program goals: to build caring youth, to build confident youth and to build future leaders.

In 2002, this study revealed that youth who actively participated in Camp Fire USA Lone Star Council's Kids Club program were about twice as likely to have these qualities than their peers (as determined by a 1999 study of Dallas students by the Search Institute).

This incredible rate of success is why the Kids Club program has recently been named:

  • 361st Point of Light by President Bush

  • "official provider of after-school care" for the Apartment Association of Greater Dallas

  • Winner of 2003 "Award for Excellence in Human Service Programming" by the Community Council of Greater Dallas
